My portraits

During my years studying at the Rietveld Academy one of my teachers noticed that besides my design work I always drew people. Facial expression was an important feature of those drawings. So he asked me to join his portrait painting classes, where he taught the painting techniques that were close to one’s natural way of painting. He taught me Venetian techniques, used in the High Renaissance by painters like Veronese and Titian. I enjoyed his classes so much that I decided to keep on painting next to graphic design and illustration.
Painting a portrait is a very intensive experience. You feel many layers of emotions in the person in front of you. You have to choose what you want to express most in your painting and what to leave hidden. But mostly it’s a semiconscious process. It just happens.
Those are the best moments. Even so it takes a lot of energy out of me and I can only take on one or two portraits a year.
